THE STORY BEHIND THE MAN

ROBERT WATERSTON

Having an adventurous spirit and falling in love with aeroplanes at air shows as a kid, I started my career in Aviation doing a commercial Pilot license and ending up in management in different fields of the game. Ending my last 5 years on a contract in Algeria, Djibouti, Yemen and Jordan running the infield operations. During this time I pondered on my next adventure which I knew would have something to do with working with my hands and particularly wood as a medium. So I decided to spend my off time building my workshop and kitting myself out with all my woodworking tools as this is what I knew my next move would be.

As I started playing around with building various items and furniture out of wood in my off time, I really started loving this move more and more. In particular, I love making tables. Perhaps because a table is a place for a good social get together and some good quality family time. I have built all sorts of things for people out of wood during my time but I am insanely passionate about tables and aim at specializing in these. I have also enjoyed combining wood with other mediums such as tiles, glass and steel. As much as I enjoy these other mediums. Wood will always be my medium of choice. Perhaps because once you cut it down it dies, but when you work it, it comes alive again. A good piece of wooden furniture if cared for, will leave a legacy and last more than a lifetime. Something to pass down to the next special person. I love the memories, the designs and the stories these pieces collect and have decided to spend my time living a quiet simple life on the eastern side of Pretoria, designing and building that which I love. To sum it all up.

"A man who works with his hands is what you call a labourer".

"A man who works with his hands and his mind is what you call a craftsman".

"But a man who works with his hands, his mind and his heart, is what you call an artist".

The only way to do great work is to love what you are doing.
